Heritage & Distillery
Kavka is the kind of vodka that reminds one why Poland's claim to be the spiritual home of the spirit remains persuasive. Produced in a distillery in western Poland whose history stretches back more than two centuries, and overseen by master distiller Urzula Wojcik — one of the very few women occupying such a position in the Polish spirits industry — Kavka represents a deliberate return to pre-industrial vodka-making philosophies. Where the late twentieth century saw an arms race of filtration and redistillation designed to strip spirits of every last trace of character, Kavka moves in precisely the opposite direction.
The name itself — meaning "jackdaw" in Polish — suggests a certain irreverent intelligence, and the liquid delivers on that promise. This is a vodka made to be tasted, not merely consumed.
Production & Tasting
Distilled just twice to preserve the character of the rye grain, Kavka presents on the nose with rich rye bread aromas, toasted grain, and a gentle nuttiness accompanied by subtle floral honey. The restraint in distillation is immediately apparent — this is a spirit that has retained its soul rather than having it refined away.
The palate is full-bodied and immensely characterful, with rye spice providing the dominant note, fresh sourdough adding complexity, and a creamy, almost buttery texture that speaks to the quality of the grain and the skill of the distillation. The finish is long and warming, with rye spice persisting alongside black pepper and displaying exceptional persistence for a vodka at 40% ABV.
Verdict
Kavka is, quite simply, one of the best value propositions in the premium vodka market. At £28.95, it offers a complexity and character that many vodkas at twice the price cannot match. The traditional production philosophy, the quality of the rye, and the exceptional skill of the distiller combine to produce a spirit that deserves to be far better known than it currently is. An emphatic recommendation.
