Heritage & Distillery
Poland's vodka heritage is among the oldest and most storied in the world, and Davna positions itself within that tradition with a blend of rye and wheat that draws on the two grains most closely associated with Polish distilling. The use of both grains in combination — rather than the single-grain approach favoured by premium brands — creates a spirit that benefits from the peppery complexity of rye and the soft creaminess of wheat simultaneously, a dual-grain character that gives Davna its distinctive profile.
Production
Rye and wheat grown in Poland are fermented and distilled four times, a process that achieves good purity while retaining the grain character that distinguishes Polish vodka from its more neutrally-inclined Scandinavian and French competitors. Charcoal filtration smooths the spirit, and bottling at 40% ABV ensures adequate palate weight. The price point of just over twenty-two pounds reflects a commitment to accessibility that is commendable in a market increasingly dominated by premium positioning.
Tasting Notes
The nose presents peppery rye spice, sweet cereal grains, and a faint bread dough note that speaks to the quality of the raw materials. On the palate, the vodka is crisp and creamy — the rye contributes peppery warmth while the wheat provides softness and sweetness, creating a balanced, dual-grain character. A gentle nuttiness adds depth. The body is good for the price point. The finish is medium, warm and peppery with sweet cereal lingering pleasantly.
The Serve
Davna is an excellent cocktail vodka at a fair price — its rye spice adds interest to a Moscow Mule, and its creaminess makes it a reliable choice for a White Russian. It also holds its own neat and chilled, in the traditional Polish fashion, alongside pickled herring or smoked meats.
Verdict
Davna represents one of the better value propositions in the Polish vodka category — a spirit with genuine grain character and honest flavour at a price that invites everyday enjoyment rather than occasional indulgence. It lacks the refinement of Belvedere or Chopin, but at half the price, it delivers more than half the experience.
