Heritage & Distillery
Skyy was created in 1992 by inventor and entrepreneur Maurice Kanbar, whose stated ambition was to produce a vodka with fewer impurities — and therefore fewer hangover-inducing congeners — than any competitor. The quadruple-distillation and triple-filtration process was designed specifically to achieve this goal, and independent laboratory analysis has broadly supported the brand's claims of exceptional purity. The distinctive cobalt blue bottle, introduced at launch, has become one of the most recognisable packaging designs in the global spirits market.
Now owned by the Campari Group, Skyy has maintained its position as a reliable mid-premium vodka — not the most exciting spirit on the shelf, but one that delivers consistent quality and genuine purity at a fair price.
Production & Tasting
On the nose, Skyy is clean and neutral — soft grain aromas are present but unassuming, and a very subtle citrus freshness provides the only point of interest in an otherwise restrained profile. The palate is smooth and straightforward, with gentle grain sweetness, a hint of pepper, and a clean, approachable character that makes Skyy a reliable cocktail ingredient if not a particularly stimulating sipping vodka.
The finish is short to medium, with a clean, dry close and minimal warmth. This is a vodka that prioritises smoothness and purity over character and complexity, and on its own terms it succeeds.
Verdict
Skyy is a competent, well-made vodka that does exactly what it promises — deliver a clean, smooth, pure spirit at a fair price. It is an excellent cocktail base, an adequate sipping vodka, and a brand whose consistency is its most reliable virtue. It is not a spirit that will excite the connoisseur, but it is one that will never disappoint the casual drinker. Fairly rated at six.
