Heritage & Distillery

Potocki is named after the distinguished Polish aristocratic family whose estates once encompassed the Lancut distillery where this vodka is produced, and the spirit carries itself with a corresponding sense of heritage and distinction. The production philosophy is one of deliberate restraint — distilled just twice, and bottled without the charcoal filtration that most producers regard as essential — Potocki preserves the full character of its rye grain in a manner that few modern vodkas dare to attempt.

This approach is not without risk — minimal distillation and zero filtration leave nowhere to hide a deficient spirit — but the quality of the rye and the skill of the distillation ensure that what remains in the bottle is not roughness but character, not impurity but personality. This is vodka-making as it was practised before the twentieth-century obsession with absolute neutrality, and it is magnificent.

Production & Tasting

On the nose, Potocki is rich and full — toasted rye bread dominates, accompanied by hazelnut and a gentle buttery warmth that is immediately inviting. The absence of charcoal filtration is apparent in the aromatic richness — this is a vodka that smells of something, and what it smells of is the very best qualities of Polish rye grain.

The palate is full-bodied and nutty, with rye spice providing the structural backbone, toasted grain adding complexity, and a beautifully creamy, almost chewy texture that is the direct consequence of the unfiltered production method. The finish is long and warming, with persistent nuttiness and rye spice of exceptional depth.

Verdict

Potocki is, in this reviewer's opinion, one of the best Polish vodkas on the market and a spirit of extraordinary character. The decision to distil only twice and forgo charcoal filtration is vindicated by every sip — this is a vodka that has something to say, and what it says is compelling, complex, and profoundly satisfying. At £37.95, it is exceptional value for a spirit of this calibre. Nine out of ten, and unreservedly recommended to anyone who believes that vodka can and should be more than a neutral spirit.

Tried this side by side with several competitors at a tasting and it stands head and shoulders above them. The nose gives you a gentle buttery warmth — it's immediately apparent this is quality. Then the palate opens up with Full-bodied and nutty with rye spice and the rye character shines through. The rye spice. I've already ordered another bottle. Excellent work from Polmos Lancut.

I was reading the tasting notes in the review and thought they sounded too good to be true for a vodka, but they're accurate. The hazelnut is genuinely there, the toasted grain delivers, and the Long and warming with persistent nuttiness is exactly as described. Served this at a tasting with friends last weekend — everyone was surprised how much character it has. We did a blind comparison against two other brands and this won hands down.
