Heritage & Concept
Celebrity-backed spirits brands are, as a rule, greeted with justified scepticism by the serious drinks industry — too many have proven to be exercises in brand-licensing rather than genuine product development. Meili, co-founded by actor Jason Momoa and entrepreneur Blaine Halvorson, deserves to be judged on more generous terms than that general scepticism might allow. Produced in Montana and made using natural spring water from a 300-million-year-old aquifer, the spirit has a genuine provenance story that extends beyond the celebrity attachment. The name — from a Norse word meaning "lovely" — and the emphasis on ancient water sourcing suggest a brand that takes its production seriously, even if the famous face inevitably dominates public perception.
Tasting Notes
The nose is crisp and mineral-led — the ancient spring water making its presence felt in a clean, fresh quality that is immediately appealing. Clean grain and soft vanilla provide the supporting aromatics, with a delicate herbal note adding subtle complexity. On the palate, Meili is exceptionally smooth, with a crystalline purity that does indeed suggest water of unusual quality. The profile is clean and mineral-driven, with gentle sweetness and a silky, almost oily texture that coats the mouth pleasantly.
The finish is medium-long, clean and mineral, fading with a soft smoothness that invites another sip. The spirit's principal virtue is its textural quality — the mouthfeel is genuinely impressive and distinguishes Meili from many competitors at its price point.
Verdict
Meili is a well-crafted vodka that earns its rating on the strength of its liquid rather than its celebrity association. The ancient spring water contributes perceptibly to the spirit's exceptional smoothness and mineral character, and the overall quality of production is creditable. At its price point, it faces stiff competition from established premium brands, but those drawn to its provenance story and Montana origins will not be disappointed.
