Heritage & Concept

La Poire was the second flavoured extension to the Grey Goose range, arriving shortly after the vanilla expression and establishing what would become a consistent hallmark of the brand's approach to flavoured spirits: restraint. Where many flavoured vodkas overwhelm the palate with artificial sweetness and chemical intensity, Grey Goose has always approached flavour infusion as a complementary exercise — the fruit should enhance the base spirit rather than obliterate it. La Poire embodies this philosophy with particular conviction, using the essence of Anjou pears to add a gentle, naturalistic fruitiness to what remains, at its core, a recognisably Grey Goose wheat vodka.

The choice of pear — which the brand's marketing materials noted was "the new pomegranate" in cocktail circles at the time of launch — was commercially astute, but the execution is more than merely fashionable. Anjou pears, with their buttery texture and subtle honey-sweet flavour, are a natural partner for the soft, almond-touched character of the Grey Goose base spirit, and the marriage is a harmonious one.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with ripe Anjou pear — an authentic, naturalistic fruit note that immediately distinguishes La Poire from the synthetic pear-drop character of lesser flavoured vodkas. Beneath the fruit sits the familiar Grey Goose signature: subtle vanilla, a whisper of white flowers, and that characteristic trace of almond that runs through the entire range. On the palate, the pear flavour is smooth and gently sweet, well integrated with the creamy wheat body and never tipping into cloying territory. The balance between fruit and spirit is admirably judged — one is always aware of drinking a vodka that has been flavoured rather than a pear cordial with added alcohol.

The finish is clean and medium in length, with the pear fading gracefully and a hint of white pepper from the base spirit providing a dry counterpoint to the fruit's sweetness. This is flavoured vodka at its most composed and least objectionable — though at this price point, one might reasonably expect a degree of complexity that La Poire does not quite deliver.

Verdict

Grey Goose La Poire is a well-executed flavoured vodka that demonstrates the brand's characteristic restraint and quality of raw materials. It lacks the depth and complexity of the best unflavoured premium vodkas, but as a cocktail ingredient — particularly in a French Pear Martini or a simple pear and soda highball — it performs with considerable grace. A solid seven.

Third bottle in and it just gets better. The nose opens with white flowers and a trace of almond — I also picked up Ripe Anjou pear that the review mentions. On the palate, Smooth and gently sweet with authentic pear flavour is spot on, and there's a richness that makes this incredibly smooth. The finish closes with a satisfying warmth. This has become my go-to. Makes an incredible Martini too.

It's a solid vodka. The nose has Ripe Anjou pear and white flowers and a trace of almond, but on the palate the Smooth and gently sweet with authentic pear flavour doesn't quite deliver the complexity I was hoping for. The finish is a bit brief. Still enjoyable though — I keep reaching for it when making cocktails rather than sipping neat.
