Heritage & Distillery
Badachro Distillery occupies one of the more spectacularly remote locations in British spirits production — perched on the shores of Loch Bad a' Chrotha in the Scottish Highlands, accessible via a single-track road that winds through some of the most dramatic scenery in the north-west Highlands. The distillery was established as a small-batch operation with a commitment to quality over volume, and Dancing Puffin — named for the seabirds that frequent the nearby coast — has become its signature spirit. The five-times distillation process is unusually thorough for a craft producer, reflecting a pursuit of smoothness and purity that defines the brand's philosophy.
Production
The vodka undergoes five separate distillations, each one refining the spirit further and removing congeners that contribute harshness. The result is a vodka of exceptional cleanliness and smoothness — qualities that the five-distillation process achieves without the aggressive charcoal filtration that some producers employ to similar but cruder effect. Highland water, soft and mineral-rich, provides the dilution medium, and the bottling at 40% ABV gives the spirit sufficient weight to express its subtle character.
Tasting Notes
The nose is clean and crisp — soft grain, a hint of sea air that may be environmental suggestion but feels entirely genuine, and delicate white pepper. On the palate, the vodka is velvety smooth, with gentle cereal sweetness, a subtle maritime mineral note, and light peppery warmth. The five distillations deliver the promised purity without stripping the spirit of all character. The finish is medium, clean and smooth with gentle warmth and the faintest suggestion of coastal salt.
The Serve
The smoothness makes Dancing Puffin an excellent neat sipper — served chilled in a small glass, it rewards quiet attention. In cocktails, it performs best where its subtlety is an asset: a Vodka Martini, a clean Collins, or simply over ice with a quality tonic.
Verdict
Badachro Dancing Puffin is a well-made Highland vodka that delivers on its promise of velvety smoothness. It lacks the complexity of the very best craft expressions, but its purity and gentle character make it a thoroughly pleasant spirit with genuine provenance. The remote Highland setting is not mere marketing window-dressing — it genuinely informs the character of the liquid.
