Heritage & Distillery
Assaranca takes its name from the beautiful Assaranca Falls in County Donegal, Ireland — a cascade set against the dramatic landscape of the Wild Atlantic Way. Produced by Sliabh Liag Distillers, one of Ireland's most ambitious and accomplished craft distillers, this vodka is infused with rowan berries and gorse blossoms, two ingredients deeply rooted in the Irish botanical landscape and the folklore of the western seaboard.
The 50cl bottle at 41% ABV and a price of just under thirty-three pounds positions this as a premium craft offering with genuine provenance. Sliabh Liag — named after the magnificent sea cliffs near Carrick, among the highest in Europe — has built a reputation for spirits that authentically reflect their Donegal terroir, and Assaranca is perhaps the purest expression of that philosophy.
Tasting Notes
The nose is immediately appealing — fruity rowan berries, the distinctive coconut-like sweetness of yellow gorse blossom, and a fresh maritime breeze that speaks of the Atlantic coast. On the palate, the vodka is smooth and fruity with rowan berry tartness balanced by floral gorse sweetness, coconut notes, and a gentle herbal complexity. The overall impression is beautifully evocative of its coastal origins — wild, natural, and deeply connected to place. The finish is medium-long with lingering berry fruit, floral notes, and a clean, saline close.
Verdict
At eight out of ten, Assaranca is a genuinely distinctive craft vodka that succeeds in translating the landscape and botanical heritage of County Donegal into a drinking experience of real character and charm. The rowan and gorse infusion is handled with skill and subtlety, and the maritime influence gives the spirit a fresh, invigorating quality. One of the finest craft vodkas to emerge from Ireland.
