Heritage & Distillery
Absolut Elyx occupies a position of considerable significance within the Absolut portfolio — it is the brand's super-premium expression, produced in deliberately small batches using a vintage copper rectification still from 1929 that is, according to Absolut, the only one of its kind still in commercial operation. The wheat is sourced from the nearby Raabeloef Castle estate, a single provenance that gives Elyx a terroir-driven identity absent from the standard Absolut range.
This magnum bottle — 175cl at 42.3% ABV — represents a substantial commitment both financially and in terms of shelf space, but it is justified by a liquid of genuinely elevated quality. The copper still's influence on the spirit is not merely cosmetic: the metal acts as a catalyst during distillation, removing unwanted sulphur compounds and contributing a smoothness and richness that column distillation alone cannot achieve.
Tasting Notes
The nose is rich and silky — macadamia butter, fresh bread, subtle white flowers, and a delicate citrus lift that adds brightness to the opulent base. On the palate, Elyx is full-bodied and luxuriously smooth with rich wheat character, macadamia cream, fresh pastry, and a gentle peppery warmth. The copper distillation imparts an exceptional softness that distinguishes this from the standard Absolut range entirely. The finish is long and warming with lingering buttery richness, gentle spice, and an immaculately clean close.
Verdict
At eight out of ten, Absolut Elyx demonstrates that the Absolut stable is capable of producing vodka at a genuinely premium level. The vintage copper still, single-estate wheat, and the elevated 42.3% ABV combine to create a spirit of real distinction that justifies its price. The magnum format makes it an excellent centrepiece for entertaining and ensures that the quality is available for multiple serves. Strongly recommended.
