Heritage & Distillery
Zlota Jesien — meaning "Golden Autumn" in Polish — emerges from the Polmos Zielona Gora distillery, the same western Polish facility responsible for Krolewska and Siwucha. This is a vodka-type apple spirit that has spent time in oak, placing it in a somewhat ambiguous stylistic territory between conventional vodka and calvados. The 50cl bottle at 43% ABV and a price of just sixteen pounds and fifty pence makes it one of the more remarkable value propositions in this publication's portfolio.
Production
The apple base gives this spirit a fundamentally different character from grain or potato vodkas. Oak ageing — a process rarely encountered in vodka production — contributes colour, tannin structure, and an additional layer of flavour complexity that transforms what might have been a simple fruit spirit into something considerably more interesting. The 43% ABV bottling strength is well-judged, providing sufficient intensity to carry the oak influence without overwhelming the delicate apple fruit.
Tasting Notes
The nose presents baked apple, toasted oak, dried fruit, and warming cinnamon spice — an autumnal profile that suits the spirit's name admirably. On the palate, the apple character is rounded and inviting, with gentle oak tannins providing structure, caramel sweetness from the wood contact, and a subtle nuttiness that adds depth. For its price, the complexity is genuinely impressive. The finish is medium with lingering apple, oak warmth, and a dry, spiced close.
Verdict
At seven out of ten, Zlota Jesien is a curious and rewarding spirit that defies easy categorisation. Not a conventional vodka in any meaningful sense, it nonetheless offers a drinking experience of genuine interest and remarkable value. Worth seeking out by anyone with an appetite for the unusual corners of the Eastern European spirits tradition.
