Ginger-flavoured vodka can be a polarising proposition — too often, the ginger is either timid and unrecognisable or harshly synthetic. Virtuous Vodka's organic approach yields a ginger character that sits squarely in the Goldilocks zone: sharp enough to be genuinely spicy, clean enough to taste of real root ginger.
The nose is invigorating — sharp, fresh ginger with a warm spiciness that immediately clears the sinuses. The rye grain base is present as a clean, slightly spicy backdrop that complements rather than competes with the ginger. On the palate, the ginger heat is bright and genuine, with a sharpness that suggests freshly grated root rather than dried powder.
At 38% ABV, this is a shade below full strength, but it carries the ginger flavour with sufficient conviction that the slightly lower alcohol is barely noticeable. The rye base provides a smooth, subtly spicy platform that enhances the ginger rather than dulling it.
This is excellent in a Moscow Mule, where the ginger vodka amplifies the ginger beer for a double hit of spice. It also works beautifully in a Dark and Stormy riff, replacing the rum for a lighter, more aromatic version. A well-executed organic spirit from an increasingly impressive Swedish house.
