Heritage & Distillery

SC Dogs Distillery holds the distinction of being the sole distillery on the Isles of Scilly — a cluster of islands twenty-eight miles off the Cornish coast whose mild microclimate and unspoiled natural beauty have attracted visitors for centuries. The Spirit of Capt'n Stevens is named for a local farmer, fisherman, and singer who lived on St Martin's from 1922 to 1996, a figure whose multifaceted life embodies the self-sufficient island spirit that the distillery seeks to capture in its products. Double-distilled in small batches, this vodka is very much a product of its environment.

Production

The vodka is double-distilled in a small copper pot still — a relatively modest number of distillations that preserves more of the grain's character than the triple or quadruple distillation processes employed by larger producers. The distillery's island location means that the spirit is exposed to a maritime atmosphere during production and maturation, and whether this contributes to the subtle saline quality detectable in the finished product or whether that quality is a product of suggestion, the effect is pleasing. Charcoal filtration smooths the spirit without removing its character.

Tasting Notes

The nose is clean and coastal — soft grain, sea breeze minerality, and a touch of floral heather create an aromatic profile that feels authentically island-born. On the palate, the vodka is smooth and gentle with cereal sweetness, maritime mineral notes, and a subtle herbal complexity. The body is light but characterful — the double distillation preserves enough grain flavour to maintain interest. The finish is medium, clean and slightly saline with a gentle warming close.

The Serve

Serve chilled and neat to appreciate the maritime character, or in a simple Vodka & Tonic with a sprig of sea thyme or rosemary. The coastal quality also makes it an interesting choice for a Dirty Martini, where the saline notes complement the olive brine.

Verdict

The Spirit of Capt'n Stevens is a charming craft vodka with genuine provenance and island character. It does not compete with the technical sophistication of the premium Polish or French producers, but it offers something they cannot — a genuine sense of place, captured in a spirit of honest quality.

Henrik Larsen VIPsAllowed Disappointing for the price
4/10

Bit disappointed. The nose is fine — I got some Clean and coastal with soft grain — but on the palate it's too one-dimensional. At £36.95, I expect more character. The Medium drops off quickly. The tasting notes in the review didn't match my experience. Might work better in cocktails than neat.
