Heritage & Distillery
Pod joins the small but growing category of pea-based vodkas — spirits that use legumes rather than grain or potato as their base material, a choice driven by both environmental and flavour considerations. Peas fix nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers and lowering the carbon footprint of the raw material. Pod sources its peas from farms in Suffolk and distils in Manchester, creating a spirit whose provenance spans the English agricultural landscape. The climate-positive values are genuine, and the vodka's character is genuinely distinctive as a result of its unusual base material.
Production
British peas from Suffolk are fermented and triple-distilled in Manchester, a process that captures the peas' natural sweetness and savoury character while achieving sufficient purity for a smooth, drinkable spirit. The pea base produces a spirit with a distinctive texture — silkier than grain vodka, with a subtle vegetal quality that is the pea's most interesting contribution. Charcoal filtration smooths the spirit, and bottling at 40% ABV provides adequate weight.
Tasting Notes
The nose is savoury and distinctive — sweet pea, fresh herbs, a gentle vegetal quality, and clean minerality. On the palate, the vodka is silky and smooth, with sweet pea providing a subtle sweetness that is quite different from grain or potato sweetness, garden herbs, a hint of vanilla, and a pleasant savoury depth. The pea base creates a unique texture that is one of the spirit's most appealing features. The finish is medium, clean and slightly sweet with herbal notes and a gentle warming close.
The Serve
The savoury quality makes Pod an interesting cocktail ingredient — it adds depth to a Bloody Mary and brings an unexpected herbal quality to a Gimlet. Served neat and chilled, it rewards careful attention, and its sustainability story provides a meaningful talking point at dinner parties.
Verdict
Pod Pea Vodka demonstrates that pea-based spirits have moved beyond novelty into genuine quality. The distinctive savoury character and silky texture set it apart from grain-based competitors, and the environmental credentials add meaningful value. A vodka for the ecologically conscious drinker who refuses to compromise on flavour.
