Heritage & Distillery

Manly Spirits Co., based in the Sydney beachside suburb from which they take their name, have carved a distinctive niche in the Australian craft spirits landscape with their commitment to incorporating sustainably foraged native botanicals into their products. The Marine Botanical Vodka represents their most audacious expression — a spirit distilled with seaweed, sea lettuce, and other marine botanicals gathered from the New South Wales coastline, creating a vodka that is genuinely unlike anything else in the global category.

The sustainability credentials are substantive rather than performative — the marine botanicals are hand-foraged by the distillery team in accordance with strict environmental protocols, and the quantities used are calibrated to ensure that harvesting has no measurable impact on the coastal ecosystems from which the ingredients are drawn.

Production & Tasting

The nose is immediately arresting — sea air and kelp dominate, accompanied by coastal minerality and a surprising floral sweetness that prevents the maritime character from becoming overwhelming. This is a vodka that announces its distinctiveness from the very first inhalation, and one either finds it fascinating or off-putting; there is little middle ground.

On the palate, Marine Botanical is savoury and complex — seaweed umami provides the dominant flavour note, with a salty-sweet interplay that recalls the experience of breathing coastal air on a warm day. The marine botanical depth is impressive, and at 41.6% ABV the spirit has sufficient weight to carry its unconventional flavour profile with authority. The finish is medium-long, with lingering sea salt and mineral notes fading to a clean oceanic freshness.

Verdict

This is not a vodka for everyone — its marine character is bold and uncompromising, and those seeking a conventional, neutral spirit will find nothing of what they are looking for. But for the adventurous drinker, Marine Botanical is a revelation: genuinely original, impeccably produced, and possessed of a sense of place that most spirits can only aspire to. Outstanding with oysters, and exceptional in a Dirty Martini.

One of the most well-crafted vodkas I've tasted. The kelp promises quality, and the palate delivers with marine botanical depth. Nothing feels harsh or out of place. The Medium-long with lingering sea salt ties it all together. I tried it neat, chilled, and in a Moscow Mule — it shines in all three. The grain base gives it a distinctive character. Can't recommend it highly enough.
