Heritage & Distillery

Hangar One occupies one of the more romantically situated distilleries in the American spirits landscape — a former Second World War aircraft hangar on the island of Alameda in San Francisco Bay. The setting is appropriate for a spirit that takes an unconventional approach to vodka production, blending Midwestern grain spirit with wine grapes from the surrounding Californian wine country to create a hybrid base that is neither purely grain nor purely grape but something distinctively its own. The approach was pioneered by the distillery's original team in the early 2000s and has been maintained through subsequent ownership changes, a testament to the distinctive character it produces.

Production

The blending of grain and grape spirits is Hangar One's defining production choice — the grain providing structure and neutrality while the grape contributes a subtle sweetness, roundness, and floral character that distinguishes the spirit from conventional grain-only vodkas. The balance between the two components is calibrated to preserve the best qualities of each: the grain's clean backbone and the grape's aromatic generosity. The resulting spirit is fresh, floral, and possessed of a distinctive character that reflects both the agricultural bounty of California and the innovative spirit of its Bay Area home.

Tasting Notes

The nose is fresh and floral — honeysuckle, subtle pear, clean grain, and a hint of grape sweetness creating an immediately appealing aromatic profile. On the palate, Hangar One is smooth and elegant, with fresh floral notes and gentle honeysuckle sweetness providing the primary impressions, grain structure maintaining backbone, and a distinctive grape-spirit roundness adding textural depth and complexity. The composition is beautifully balanced — the grain and grape elements complementing rather than competing with one another.

The finish is medium-long, floral and smooth, with honeysuckle fading to gentle warmth. The producers' description of "fresh and slightly floral" is accurate but undersells the spirit's considerable charm and complexity.

Verdict

Hangar One Straight Vodka is a genuinely distinctive American craft spirit whose grain-grape hybrid base produces a vodka of real elegance and character. The floral, honeysuckle-led profile is immediately appealing, the production approach is innovative without being gimmicky, and the overall quality is excellent for the price. One of the most characterful American vodkas on the market.

A reliable pour that won't blow your mind but does the job. The nose has Fresh and floral with honeysuckle — the review is accurate there. The palate gives you Beautifully composed, which is fine but a bit safe. I keep reaching for other bottles when I want to sip neat, but for cocktails it's hard to complain. The floral and smooth with honeysuckle fade and gentle warmth is clean.
