Heritage & Concept

Altius — Latin for "higher" — represents Grey Goose's most deliberate attempt to elevate its core proposition through water sourcing. While the standard expression uses spring water from the Gensac limestone aquifer in the Cognac region, Altius sources its blending water from alpine springs in the French Alps, a change that the brand claims produces a perceptibly different character in the finished spirit. The elegant bottle, designed to evoke the beauty of the alpine landscape, is a handsome piece of packaging that justifies at least some of the considerable premium over the standard bottling.

The question of whether different water sources produce meaningfully different vodkas is one of the category's perennial debates. The mineral content, pH, and softness of the blending water undeniably influence the final spirit — this is a matter of chemistry rather than opinion — but whether those differences are perceptible to most drinkers is another matter entirely. Altius, to its credit, presents a compelling case for the affirmative.

Tasting Notes

The nose is distinctly different from the standard Grey Goose — there is a crispness, a mountain-air quality, that is absent from the warmer, more rounded Cognac-region expression. Clean wheat sits alongside delicate floral notes and a soft mineral character that one might, without excessive poetic licence, describe as alpine. On the palate, Altius is exceptionally smooth, with pristine wheat sweetness, a subtle herbal quality, and a remarkable purity that does indeed suggest the influence of exceptionally clean water. The spring water lends a crystalline clarity to the spirit that distinguishes it from the standard bottling's more approachable warmth.

The finish is long and elegant, with a clean mineral fade and gentle white pepper. If the standard Grey Goose is a cashmere jumper, Altius is the same wool, but lighter, cooler, and somehow more precisely woven.

Verdict

Grey Goose Altius is a premium expression that delivers a perceptibly different character from the standard bottling. Whether that difference justifies a price nearly three times higher is a question each drinker must answer for themselves, but in terms of pure liquid quality, Altius is a beautifully refined spirit that rewards the attentive palate. The alpine water sourcing is more than marketing — it produces a genuinely distinctive vodka.

I keep coming back to this bottle and appreciating the subtlety. The Crisp mountain air on the nose is genuinely there if you take a moment to notice. On the palate, The spring water lends a crystalline clarity is rich and satisfying, with subtle alpine herbal quality and remarkable purity developing. A vodka that rewards attention. At 40%, the proof is perfectly judged.
