Heritage & Distillery

Edwards 1902 is an English potato vodka of genuine terroir — the potatoes from which it is distilled are grown just a few miles from the Elsham Wold Distillery in Lincolnshire, a degree of farm-to-bottle proximity that even the most committed Polish potato vodka producers would struggle to match. The 1902 in the name references the year the Edwards family began farming the land that now supplies the distillery, lending the brand an agricultural heritage that predates the modern craft spirits movement by over a century.

Production

The use of local potatoes — a crop that Lincolnshire's rich, loamy soil is particularly suited to producing — gives Edwards 1902 a character that is authentically rooted in its English terroir. Potato vodka demands a different production approach from grain vodka, requiring greater quantities of raw material and a more technically demanding fermentation and distillation process. That Edwards delivers a spirit of this quality from a relatively small-scale operation speaks to the skill and commitment of the distilling team.

Tasting Notes

The nose is earthy and creamy — vanilla, fresh butter, and a subtle green herbal note that hints at the potato's vegetable origins. On the palate, the vodka is distinctly creamy with rich potato character, buttery sweetness, vanilla bean, and a gentle white pepper spice that provides structure. The full-bodied mouthfeel is the hallmark of well-made potato vodka, and Edwards delivers it with confidence. The finish is medium-long with lingering cream, earth, and a clean mineral fade.

Verdict

At eight out of ten, Edwards 1902 is an impressive English potato vodka that demonstrates this country's capacity to produce spirits that compete with the finest European examples. The field-to-bottle provenance is genuinely meaningful, and the resulting spirit possesses a character and authenticity that mass-produced competitors simply cannot replicate.

Third bottle in and it just gets better. The nose opens with fresh butter — I also picked up delicate notes that the review mentions. On the palate, Distinctly creamy with rich potato character is spot on, and there's a a gentle white pepper spice that makes this incredibly smooth. The finish closes with Medium-long with lingering cream. This has become my go-to. Makes an incredible Martini too.
