Heritage & Distillery

Desi Daru occupies a distinctive position in the British vodka landscape — a London-made spirit that draws explicit inspiration from India, using natural mineral water sourced from the Himalayas to create a vodka with a character informed by two cultures simultaneously. The name "Desi Daru" translates loosely as "country liquor" in Hindi, a reference to the traditional home-brewed spirits of the Indian subcontinent, and the brand seeks to bridge the gap between British craft distilling and South Asian culinary heritage.

Production

English wheat provides the base, quadruple-distilled to achieve clean purity before being blended with Himalayan mineral water — a water source whose high mineral content contributes a distinctive quality to the finished spirit. The bottling at 41% ABV provides slightly more weight than the standard 40%, and charcoal filtration smooths the spirit while preserving the mineral character that the Himalayan water contributes.

Tasting Notes

The nose is velvety and creamy — soft wheat, a subtle mineral quality from the Himalayan water, and gentle spice. On the palate, the vodka is smooth and rich, with cream, gentle cardamom warmth, wheat sweetness, and a distinctive mineral character. The interplay between the English wheat and the Himalayan water creates something genuinely original. The finish is medium-long, warm and spiced with a creamy, lingering close.

The Serve

The subtle spice makes Desi Daru an excellent base for a Chai Martini or a spiced vodka cocktail. It also works beautifully with Indian tonic water and a strip of orange peel, the spice notes harmonising with the quinine. For a culturally appropriate neat serve, chill well and pair with spiced nuts or samosas.

Verdict

Desi Daru is a genuinely original vodka that combines British distilling tradition with Indian cultural inspiration to create something distinctive and appealing. The Himalayan water contributes a real mineral quality, and the subtle spice adds interest. At nearly thirty-seven pounds, it is fairly priced for a spirit of this originality and quality.
