Heritage & Distillery

Chopin occupies a position in the vodka world analogous to that of the great composer whose name it bears — a Polish cultural icon of genuine international significance. The Podlasie distillery, located in the agricultural heartland of eastern Poland, has produced Chopin vodka since 1993, and the potato expression — the brand's flagship — has become one of the most acclaimed spirits in the global vodka canon. The decision to work exclusively with a single potato variety, harvested at the peak of the growing season, reflects a commitment to raw material quality that is more commonly associated with single malt whisky than with vodka production.

Production

It takes approximately five kilograms of potatoes to produce a single bottle of Chopin — a ratio that speaks to the inefficiency and expense of potato distillation compared to grain, and that also explains the richness and depth of the resulting spirit. The potatoes are quadruple-distilled in a process that preserves the earthy, waxy character of the tuber while achieving the purity necessary for a premium vodka. Remarkably, Chopin is not charcoal-filtered — the spirit is clean enough after four distillations to be bottled without further filtration, a testament to the quality of the raw material and the skill of the distillation.

Tasting Notes

The nose is rich and immediately compelling — earthy potato, green apple, vanilla cream, fresh herbs, and the distinctive waxy quality that marks premium potato vodka. On the palate, Chopin is full-bodied and velvety, with earthy potato depth, green apple, vanilla custard, and a subtle almond sweetness. The smoothness is exceptional — the unfiltered spirit has a textural richness that charcoal-filtered vodkas cannot match. The depth of flavour is remarkable, with each sip revealing new nuances. The finish is long and warming, with earthy richness, cream, and a clean peppery close.

The Serve

Chopin Potato demands to be served neat and chilled — this is a sipping vodka of the highest order, and its complexity is best appreciated without the distraction of mixers. In a Martini, it provides extraordinary body and depth, creating a cocktail of genuine distinction. For the traditional Polish serve, pair with pickled herring and dark bread.

Verdict

Chopin Potato Vodka earns its nine-out-of-ten rating with authority — this is one of the finest vodkas available at any price, a spirit that demonstrates what potato distillation can achieve when conducted with skill, patience, and uncompromising raw material quality. The benchmark for the potato vodka category, and a spirit that deserves its place among the world's great spirits.

Not terrible but not worth the premium. The nose promised Rich and earthy with green apple and the distinctive waxy quality of premium potato vodka, but the palate is flat and the a clean peppery close disappears too quickly. I've had better vodkas at half the price. The Exceptionally smooth with remarkable depth the review describes wasn't apparent to me. Perhaps I got a bad bottle.
