Heritage & Distillery
Carvia takes its name from the Latin nomenclature for caraway seeds — Carum Carvi — a naming choice that signals both botanical precision and a reverence for the ingredient that defines this spirit's character. The rye base provides a natural affinity with caraway, the two ingredients sharing a long history of co-occurrence in Eastern European and Scandinavian culinary and distilling traditions. At 43% ABV, the spirit is bottled at a strength that gives the caraway infusion sufficient intensity without allowing it to overwhelm the underlying rye character.
Tasting Notes
The nose is warmly spicy — caraway seed, rye bread, subtle anise, and a gentle earthy quality that evokes a well-stocked spice cupboard. On the palate, the caraway is delicate rather than assertive, integrated with the rye grain sweetness and accompanied by fennel and a warming peppery quality. The balance is well-judged — this is a single-spice vodka that lets its defining ingredient speak clearly without shouting. The finish is medium with lingering caraway warmth, subtle anise, and a clean, dry close.
The Serve
Carvia is excellent served neat and chilled as an accompaniment to cured meats, smoked fish, and hard cheeses — contexts in which the caraway character provides a natural flavour bridge. In cocktails, it adds an intriguing spicy dimension to a Bloody Mary or a Martini, and works surprisingly well in a simple highball with ginger beer.
Verdict
At seven out of ten, Carvia is a well-executed single-spice vodka that occupies interesting territory between vodka and aquavit. The caraway infusion is handled with restraint and the rye base provides a sympathetic foundation. At under twenty-three pounds, it represents good value for a spirit of genuine character and culinary versatility.
