Heritage & Concept

Ammos — meaning "sand" in Greek — is a craft vodka that channels the character of the Aegean Sea with striking authenticity. The spirit is cold-distilled, a technique that preserves delicate aromatic compounds that would be destroyed by conventional heat distillation, producing a spirit with an unusually vivid and layered flavour profile. The Greek provenance is not merely geographical but sensory — the lemon, olive, and salt notes that characterise the spirit evoke the Aegean landscape with the fidelity of a well-composed photograph.

Production

Cold distillation — conducted under vacuum at lower temperatures than conventional distillation — is a technique borrowed from the perfumery industry and increasingly adopted by progressive spirits producers seeking to preserve heat-sensitive aromatic compounds. The result, in Ammos's case, is a vodka with an unusually vivid flavour profile that retains the bright, fresh qualities of its ingredients more completely than heat-distilled equivalents. The forty-two per cent ABV provides a robust platform for the spirit's complex character.

Tasting Notes

The nose is immediately evocative — bright Aegean lemon, subtle olive brine, sea salt, clean grain, and a hint of wild thyme combining to create an aromatic profile of striking Mediterranean character. On the palate, the spirit is clean and layered, with vivid lemon providing the primary impression, subtle olive-salt savouriness adding an unusual and appealing savoury dimension, herbal complexity from wild thyme contributing depth, and a crisp, structured backbone maintaining balance. This is a vodka that tastes unmistakably of its origin — the Aegean rendered in liquid form.

The finish is long, crisp, and saline, with lingering lemon, olive, and a dry, minerally close that is entirely in keeping with the spirit's Mediterranean identity. The cold distillation technique has preserved the aromatics beautifully, producing a finish of unusual vivacity.

Verdict

Ammos Aegean Vodka is a genuinely exciting spirit — a Greek craft vodka that channels its Mediterranean origin with rare authenticity and produces a flavour profile unlike anything else in the category. The cold distillation technique delivers perceptible benefits, the forty-two per cent strength provides authority, and the overall package is both distinctive and deeply satisfying. A spirit for the adventurous drinker who values provenance and character above all.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The nose has Bright Aegean lemon but on the palate there's a harshness that I wasn't expecting from the review. The herbal complexity and a crisp described didn't come through for me. The Long has a burn where I wanted clean warmth. Others clearly rate it highly so it may be personal preference. Won't be buying another bottle though.
