Production
Sapling's wheat vodka base is triple-distilled before being infused with raspberry and hibiscus. The use of wonky but flavoursome fruit — selected for taste rather than appearance — produces a maceration of genuine character, and the hibiscus adds a floral, slightly tart quality that prevents the raspberry from becoming merely sweet. The balance between fruit sweetness and hibiscus tartness is the spirit's most accomplished feature. Charcoal filtration follows, and bottling at 40% ABV ensures the flavours are presented with sufficient strength.
Tasting Notes
The nose is bright and inviting — ripe raspberry, floral hibiscus, and a gentle tartness, with subtle wheat sweetness providing a foundation. On the palate, the vodka is vibrant and fruity, with ripe raspberry, hibiscus tea, a pleasant tart edge, and a smooth wheat base. The sweetness is well-balanced — present but not dominant, with the hibiscus tartness providing effective counterpoint. The finish is medium, clean and berry-forward with hibiscus florality and a refreshing tart close.
The Serve
This vodka makes an excellent Cosmopolitan variation, the raspberry and hibiscus replacing the traditional cranberry with more complexity. It also serves well over ice with soda water and a lime wedge for a simple, refreshing long drink. For a more indulgent serve, try it in a Clover Club.
