Heritage & Distillery
Formerly known as Rock Sea Vodka, Mermaid Salt Vodka is produced at the Isle of Wight Distillery — a small craft operation that has built a loyal following for spirits that genuinely reflect their island provenance. The addition of rock sea salt to a grain vodka base is a simple concept executed with care, creating a spirit that captures something of the coastal character of its island home.
The Isle of Wight Distillery has established itself as one of England's most distinctive craft producers, and the Mermaid brand — encompassing both gin and vodka — draws on the island's maritime heritage and natural ingredients with an authenticity that transcends mere marketing.
Tasting Notes
The nose is clean and inviting — grain spirit, sea salt, a hint of brine, fresh citrus, and mineral freshness that evokes a walk along the island's coastline. On the palate, the vodka is smooth and rounded with a distinctive coastal salinity that provides structure without overwhelming the grain sweetness, lemon zest, and subtle savoury depth. The salt is present but judiciously restrained — a seasoning rather than a dominant flavour. The finish is medium with lingering sea salt, mineral character, and a crisp, bracing close.
The Serve
Mermaid Salt Vodka excels in a Dirty Martini, where the natural salinity amplifies the olive brine. It is also excellent in a Bloody Mary — the salt enhancing the tomato and spice elements — and in a simple serve over ice with a quality tonic and a slice of grapefruit.
Verdict
At seven out of ten, Mermaid Salt Vodka is a well-executed coastal spirit that delivers on its maritime promise without resorting to gimmickry. The price is somewhat ambitious for what it is, but the quality of production and the genuinely distinctive character justify a modest premium. A pleasant and original English craft vodka.
