Heritage & Distillery
Kavka — the Polish word for jackdaw — produces its spirits in the ancient town of Sandomierz, one of Poland's oldest continuously inhabited settlements and a centre of agricultural tradition. This orchard expression marries plum and apple with Kavka's characteristic rye-based vodka, creating a fruit-forward spirit that draws on Poland's rich tradition of fruit-infused spirits. The combination of plum and apple is inspired by the orchards of the Sandomierz region, where both fruits have been cultivated for centuries.
Production
Kavka's rye-based vodka — a spirit with a characteristically spicy, peppery profile — serves as the canvas for the plum and apple infusion. The fruits are macerated in the spirit, and the resulting vodka is filtered and bottled at 38% ABV. The rye base provides a structural spiciness that prevents the fruit sweetness from becoming cloying — a balance that distinguishes this expression from the sugary confections that dominate the flavoured vodka market.
Tasting Notes
The nose is immediately inviting — sweet ripe plum, crisp green apple, cinnamon spice, and the peppery backbone of the rye base. On the palate, the vodka is sweet and refreshing, with plum and apple balanced by gentle spice and the characteristic Kavka rye warmth. The fruit is well-integrated, creating genuine complexity rather than mere sweetness. The finish is medium, fruity and gently spiced with plum and apple lingering pleasantly.
The Serve
This vodka makes an excellent autumn cocktail ingredient — try it in a Vodka Sour with cinnamon syrup, or simply over ice with apple juice and a cinnamon stick. The plum character also makes it a natural pairing for an Eastern European-inspired long drink with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime.
Verdict
Kavka Orchard Plum and Apple is a well-made flavoured vodka that benefits enormously from its rye base — the grain's natural spiciness providing the structural backbone that prevents the fruit from becoming merely sweet. At under thirty pounds, it represents good value for a spirit of genuine character and Polish heritage.
