Heritage & Distillery
Finlandia has been one of the stalwarts of the international vodka market since 1970, when it became one of the first Finnish vodkas to be exported globally. The brand's identity is inseparable from its Finnish provenance — the barley grown in the long summer daylight of northern Finland, the glacial spring water from the Rajamaki aquifer, and the clean, minimalist aesthetic that characterises the bottle design all contribute to a brand image that is refreshingly consistent with the liquid inside. The grapefruit variant is one of several flavoured expressions in the range.
Production
The base Finlandia vodka undergoes an extraordinary seven distillations from Finnish six-row barley, a process that produces one of the cleanest, most neutral base spirits in the commercial vodka market. Natural grapefruit flavouring is added post-distillation, and the spirit is bottled at 37.5% ABV. The grapefruit character is clean and identifiable as fruit rather than confectionery — a standard that not all flavoured vodkas at this price point manage to meet.
Tasting Notes
The nose presents fresh pink grapefruit, citrus pith, and a subtle barley sweetness beneath. On the palate, the vodka is light and refreshing with juicy grapefruit, a pleasant bitter-sweet balance, and the clean, crisp character that defines the Finlandia house style. The body is light — the low ABV limits the spirit's weight — but the grapefruit flavour is well-judged and authentic. The finish is short and clean with grapefruit zest lingering and a dry, slightly bitter close that prevents the spirit from becoming cloying.
The Serve
This vodka was designed for long, refreshing serves — over ice with tonic or soda and a wedge of fresh grapefruit, it becomes an effortlessly enjoyable summer drink. It also works well in a Paloma-style cocktail or a Greyhound, where the added grapefruit character complements the fresh citrus juice.
Verdict
Finlandia Grapefruit is a competent, unpretentious flavoured vodka that delivers its promise of citrus refreshment at a very fair price. It lacks the depth and sophistication of premium flavoured expressions, but for everyday mixing and casual summer drinking, it represents honest value.
